What Are Fissure Sealants?
As can be seen on the image on the left, many times, teeth can have deep grooves which, when looked at under magnification, penetrate deeply into the chewing surface of the teeth. These natural tooth features are known as “pits and fissures” and can range from shallow, to extending several millimetres into a healthy and normal tooth.
The problem with these fissures of course, is that they are an easy place for food debris and plaque to get caught and a difficult spot to clean thoroughly for that reason. Imagine you just ate a chocolate biscuit and then brushed your teeth with your toothbrush – the chocolate can still be stuck deeply into these fissures.
If we spend the time SEALING these fissures, we create a surface that is more difficult for food to get caught, and much easier to clean. The other great thing about this preventive technique is that it does not involve any drilling, but just uses adhesive dentistry to bond the material directly to the cleansed tooth structure.
